What is LIAISON Q.S.E.T. Quick Pick?

The LIAISON® Q.S.E.T. (Quantitative Stool Extraction and Test) Quick Pick device is intended for self-collection of human stool specimens in a home setting by individuals aged fourteen (14) and older, or by an adult caregiver for children aged two - thirteen (2-13), and for specimen preparation and testing in a professional laboratory setting in the designated stool assays on the automated LIAISON® Analyzer family.

Stool Biomarkers in Clinical Practice

Stool biomarkers support clinical assessment of gastrointestinal conditions, providing non-invasive insight into biological processes in the GI tract. Their clinical value depends on accurate interpretation within the clinical context and proper sample collection and handling.

 Fecal Calprotectin

Fecal calprotectin is a non-invasive biomarker of intestinal inflammation, reflecting neutrophil activity in the gut. It supports diagnosis and monitoring of IBD, helps distinguish IBD from IBS, and guides clinical decisions. Guidelines recommend its use to assess disease activity and response to therapy.

 Fecal Elastase-1

Fecal elastase-1 is a stable, pancreas-specific enzyme used as a non-invasive marker of exocrine pancreatic function. It aids in diagnosing EPI, with levels reflecting disease severity. European guidelines recommend it for assessing pancreatic insufficiency without dietary restrictions.

Pre-Analytical Considerations

Fecal biomarker results are affected by pre-analytical factors such as stool consistency, collection timing, storage, and handling. Calprotectin shows variability with liquid stools and patient fluctuations, while elastase-1 may yield falsely low results in diarrheal samples due to dilution.
